Aloha!

hawaii06 031We arrived in Hawaii lastnight about 40 minutes ahead of our scheduled arrival time.  We were exhausted after the long flight but Zach did amazingly well on the plane.  He didn’t fuss the entire time and actually slept for much of the second flight which was nice.

Today we spent the day driving around the island sight-seeing and taking lots of pictures.  This place is just beautiful.  I only wish I could capture in the photos what I’m actually seeing with my eyes.

I’ll be updating my Flickr page all week long so make sure and check back for updates.  I’ll try to write when I have a chance but I’m not promising anything.

An update and a question

It seems like this week cannot possibly go by any slower.  Usually I’m wanting time to slow down, but this week I just want it to speed up already!  I suppose the last few short work weeks probably perpetuated the feeling a bit but it just seems like the week is going on and on and on.  I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I leave for Hawaii on Saturday.  Nothing at all.

I have my suitcase partially packed.  All of my clothes (and Zach’s) are packed with the exception of a few last minute things that had to be washed.  Zach’s backpack full of toys, snacks, blanket, pillow, and other distractions is almost ready.  I just have to figure out whether to pack the dvd player in his bag or mine.  I need to make myself a checklist of all of the various electronic devices and chargers we need so I don’t forget anything important.

I’m really slugging along at work today.  Other people keep distracting me (which isn’t hard to do) and I’ve gotten nothing done.

My lovely cold–that I totally thought was clearing up–is back with a vengeance.  It started yesterday afternoon and has gotten worse since then.  It seems to be clouding my brain quite a bit today and keeping me from being able to think very much.  I have a feeling that the people sitting around us on the 6 1/2 hour flight from Vegas to Hawaii will love me.

So, for lack of having anything intelligent to actually say today, I’m going to ask a question.  We’re going to Hawaii and I know there are some really cool things to see there, I just don’t know what.  I know we’re planning to go to Pearl Harbor and on a whale watching cruise or something but that’s about it.  We’re going to be staying in Honolulu and probably won’t travel to the other islands unless we suddenly become rich.  So, where should we go and what should we do?

This picture has nothing to do with the post that follows, but isn’t he cute?

I decided to take it easy and relax again lastnight.  I know that I should have been getting some things done, but I just could not motivate myself to do anything.  So instead, I chose to sit on my butt in front of the tv most of the night.  Instead of stressing about all of the things I need to get done before we leave Saturday morning, I’m choosing to just ignore it.  That means that I’ll be freaking out about this time on Thursday when I realize just how little time I have left.

About the only thing I’ve been thinking of in preparation for our trip is what music I need to have loaded up on my mp3 player to get me through the week.  Obviously, this is the most important thing.  Who needs clothes when you can listen to music?  Of course I’ll have my trusty Pearl Jam, KT Tunstall, and some Jack Johnson, but I’m not sure what else.  What music gets you in the mood for sun, sand, and Hawaiian beaches?

Comment Contest!

I apologize in advance for posting about leaving comments twice in one day, but I think this is one you’ll want to know about.  451 Press is holding a commenting contest from now through January 31st.  If you leave a comment on any 451 Press blog (a quality comment) you are automatically entered into a random drawing.  One lucky commenter will win $500 and five other commenters will win $100 each.  You can read the details here.

Seriously, this is such an easy way to get some fast cash and maybe recover a little from the holidays.  Why not jump on over to 451 Press now and leave some comments?  You can start at Tot TV Watch (shameless plug) and then check out some of the other great blogs over there.  Who knows?  You might just find some new daily reads.

De-Lurking Week

January 8-12 is De-Lurking Week.  You know what that means, right?  That means that when you read a blog you must leave a comment.  I know it’s hard to always leave a comment because I’m probably one of the worst lurkers out there, but I’m going to try to leave at least one comment on every blog I read this week.  I know there are some of you out there reading that don’t comment so why not go ahead and de-lurk today?  And, while you’re at it, go over to Miss Zoot’s page and leave a comment for a good cause.

Reflecting

It is 11:05 p.m. and the only sounds I hear are the ticking of the clock in the corner and an occasional car passing by.  Even the animals are asleep as I sit here in silence.  I don’t want to go to bed because I know what tomorrow brings.  I want this moment, this peace, to last forever.

As my eyes grow heavy, I reflect on the weekend and how I did things on my terms.  Friday I declined an invitation to a friend’s house, electing instead to stay home with Zach so he could rest and recover from his illness.  Other than a little bit of necessary shopping, I stayed home on Saturday as well.  I played with my son.  I spent some time writing articles for my other blog.  I watched some TV.  I finished knitting a hat and started on another one.  I put together Zach’s new stroller.  I went to bed when I felt like it and I started reading a book.  I even called my dad and told him we wouldn’t be at church or dinner afterwards on Sunday because we all needed to stay home to rest and recover from our illnesses.  I spent the day Sunday relaxing and enjoying myself.  I didn’t even leave my house and it was wonderful.

This weekend was exactly what I needed.  There were so many things I could have been doing but I chose to let myself relax.  I am proud of myself.  I think the hardest task I did all weekend was cooking dinner on Sunday night.

The only disappointment is that it cannot last.  When I fall asleep it will be over and the chaos of a new week will begin.  Hubby and I will return to work.  Zach will go back to day care, but not without a  fight that will drain me before my day even really begins.  The evening will be filled with chores and planning for our trip next week.  But, at least there is the promise of next week-6 days in sunny paradise to look forward to.
