The Itch

I’m getting the itch to redesign this place again.  I’ve got lots of ideas running around in my head.  The only problem is I don’t have the time to do it and it is driving me nuts.  Plus, it has been so long since I’ve done a full web site design that it will probably take me twice as long to actually do it.  I’m not sure I remember much about html or css at this point.  I need a week with no husband, no baby, no job, and no responsibility.  Anyone want to step in and take over so I can have a week off?

So Not Pink

I really hate the color pink.  Seriously I do.  It has something to do with the whole idea of pink being girly I guess and the fact that I’ve always been a bit of a tomboy.  I’m not really sure where it all began but ever since I’ve been allowed to choose my own clothes, I’ve never worn anything pink…until last week.  I bought a t-shirt in Arizona that is brown with pink writing on it.  I have since decided that pink is okay if matched with brown…cause you know, brown is the color of mud pies and that’s not too girly.

Since I was home alone tonight and had some time to spare, I thought I would spruce up the old blog a bit.  I’ve been really tired of the green for quite some time now and just hadn’t had a chance to do anything about it.  I like the brown/pink look for now, but that could change tomorrow when my sanity comes back.

Night-night.

Housekeeping, Money, & Miscellaneous

First of all, a couple of general housekeeping things:

  1. I have finally decided to come out of the closet a little bit and start using the name that most of you know me by anyway, dee.  I’m getting a bit tired of the hardtoimagine name.  Even though there is some deep meaning  and lots of good memories tied to it, I think it is time to become a little less anonymous and just be myself.  I feel good about this for now, until someone that I don’t want reading finds my site anyway.  But, that is the risk of putting it out on the web.  It is not like I hide it very well anyway with all the pictures I post!  I will still keep the old name on tblog for those of you that read there also.
  2. I’m sure you’ve all noticed by now, but when I changed the site around, I also added some ads.  I thought long and hard about doing this because ads on blog sites have always annoyed me.  But, given my current financial situation, it was a choice of trying to find a way to fund my web sites or give them up.  I’m not really wanting to give them up, so now there are ads.  I’m hoping that it will at least help a little bit with my hosting costs.  I know at least one of my web sites will be closing down soon because it just never became what I wanted it to be and I don’t have the time to get it there right now.  So, please feel free to click away on those ads and help me keep this site running because out of the 4 sites I run, this one is the most important to me.

Now, on to the money and miscellaneous parts.  I was sitting there lastnight staring at my budget spreadsheet and trying to figure out where in the heck all the money is going to these days.  I figured out that we are currently spending about $400-500 a month more than what we are bringing in.  That is an estimate because hubby’s paychecks always differ in the amount.  His checks should be going up soon because they are hitting their busy season and he should be getting a lot of over time.  That will make up for the difference over the summer months, but when we hit fall, we’ll be in the same boat we are in now.  Hopefully we can get some things paid off before then so it won’t be quite so bad.  The thing that is really killing us right now is day care.  That really makes up the difference of what we are behind each month.  What really stinks about this whole situation is that I am realizing that there is no way in hell we should even be thinking about having another kid.  And, I had just kind of decided that I was going to be ready to start trying again in June.

Then, while I was sitting there contemplating this whole situation, my brother calls me and tells me about this great employee discount that his company has been offered through Dell.  Apparently through the end of April, they can get 35% off, plus another 12% off of Dell computers.  He called to tell me because I’ve been questioning him about laptops lately because I desperately need to replace mine.  It is slowly dying and I’m afraid that it is just going to give out any day now.  If I bought one through Dell, right now, I could get almost half off.  I want this so bad I was practically in tears because I know I can’t buy anything else right now.  Next to Zach, my laptop is probably the most important thing in my life.  I know I can live without it, but I will always be upset that I missed this opportunity.

Brother also hooked me up with the new Tool cd.  I’m not really a huge Tool fan, but I don’t mind listening to them on occasion.  I haven’t even heard the whole thing yet, but so far it sounds pretty good.

Boot Camp

I’ve always been a Windows user that really wanted to play around with a Mac. This might convince me to switch with my next computer purchase.  I think it is a great idea.  It would be wonderful for web site design.

Completeness

Sometimes I feel like my day is just not complete unless I have written a blog entry. My blog is my place to get out my excess energy. It is my place to rant, brag, be creative, and just release all of the things in my head. I suppose that’s why I like it so much. It is therapuetic in a way. Some days I don’t have a specific topic in mind to write about, but as soon as I start typing it usually rushes to me.

Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time investigating Content Management Systems. I have a website project that I’ve been putting off for a while because I would like to set it up with a CMS. I need something that I can set up and then have several different users update pages on a regular basis. It is for a non-profit, so I can’t really spend any money on a fancy system. I have considered using either Moveable Type or WordPress for it, but am not sure that either of them will be exactly what I want. So, I’ve been on a search and so far have not found just the right one.

During my search, however, I did come across a free blog host that some of you Tbloggers may be interested in. It seems almost everyone at Tblog is jumping ship all of a sudden and I’ve had lots of them asking for suggestions of places to go. My new discovery is http://www.blogsome.com/. The service is free and is run on WordPress, which is pretty user friendly. I haven’t tried out Blogsome yet, but I do use WordPress and have no complaints. If you are still looking around, it might be an option to try out. There is also the fairly new http://wordpress.com/, but it requires an invite which I haven’t received yet.

Instant Knowledge

I can’t remember what movie it was on, but it was one of those sci-fi futuristic type movies where a person could plug into a machine and they could instantly learn years worth of knowledge on a certain subject. I wish I had one of those machines. I love having my blog on Moveable Type, but there is so much to learn about it. My knowledge of web design is pretty much limited to html and css. I don’t know much of anything about perl, php, java, or any other scripting languages. This has become a bit of a problem. Moveable Type and other blogging programs run on scripts.

I can install and use MT just fine. I love the way it works. Where I run into problems is when MT doesn’t do what it is supposed to. I’m very limited in the troubleshooting that I can do myself and when you are using the free personal edition, you don’t have access to much support other than the forums. I have run into problems twice now.

The first problem came with an install to my family website. I was attempting to install MT and then to migrate my WordPress blog to MT. As far as I can tell, the install was done correctly but when I try to run the program I keep getting a 500 internal server error. I have checked everything that is mentioned in the MT Knowledge Base, but still cannot get it to run. I put a post in the forums and have not had any replies. I’m getting a bit frustrated about it.

Then this morning, I installed a plug-in that I could not get to work. Somehow, after messing around with it for quite some time I did something that fixed it, although it was by mistake and I’m still not quite sure what I did.

I really wish that I had the time to learn more about all of this stuff. I have a feeling my limited knowledge will soon be completely outdated and I don’t have the time or energy to keep myself up to date.
