Because One Is Never Enough

I absolutely HATE MySpace.  I have always hated it, since the first time I heard of it.  I hate the whole concept of being cool based on how many "friends" you have.  But, at the same time I do kind of like the whole community aspect.  Last weekend I found out that one of my best friends signed up for MySpace.  Then I went to the reunion and heard that a couple more people had MySpace pages.  So, I caved.  I gave in.  I signed up so I could comment on their pages and now I’m a follower.  If you are on MySpace, stop by and say hi.  You can find me here.

Before I went on vacation, I also mentioned that I got an invite for VOX, the new multimedia blogging platform from Six Apart.  Vox is still a work in progress, but they needed people to test it out before the final release.  I’ve been playing around with it and so far I love it.  One of the greatest features of Vox is that you can upload your photos, videos, music, etc. to share with everyone.  It is somewhat similar to MySpace in that it has a huge emphasis on community.  When you find other friends or bloggers you enjoy, you can add them to your neighborhood.

The reason I’m telling you this is that my "neighborhood" is looking pretty lonely right now.  I would like to send invites out to any of you that might be interested in checking out Vox.  Right now, I have only 2 standard invites that will allow you full access including a blog.  I also have unlimited starter invites that allows you a member profile, neighborhood, and commenting privileges.  As Vox grows, the starter accounts will change over to standard accounts.

So, if you are interested in checking out Vox, leave me a comment or send me an e-mail and I will get you hooked up.  If you want to take a look around first, please check out my page here.

Google Is My Friend

A while back I finally gave in and started using those cool RSS feeds that people have on their blogs.  I had toyed with the idea of using a feed reader for a while and checked out a couple but never really found one that I liked.  But, because of this I was determined that I would find a way to reduce my blog reading time and I figured that using a reader would help.  During my search for the best feed reader ever, I discovered the Google Reader.  I’ve become rather fond of Gmail recently, so I figured I would give it a shot.  It was really easy to add new feeds and I loved the simple, easy-on-the-eyes look of it.

In the last month or so since I’ve been using it, I have totally fallen in love with it.  I don’t spend nearly as much time checking and re-checking my favorite sites for updates.  All I have to do is go to my reader and the newest updates are already there.  The best part is, whether I’m at the office or at home, I can log in to the site and read up without trying to remember everyone’s web addresses.  Plus, I just discovered that I can also read it on my phone, but the speed of my cellular internet connection makes that pretty much pointless.

The only downside that I have found to using the reader is that I don’t comment on other blogs nearly as much as I used to.  When I read a post I think that I’ll go comment later, but I usually end up forgetting.  Plus, I also miss looking at everyone’s cool blog designs.  Maybe I think too much like a designer, but to me, I think you get more of a person’s personality through their design and the "extras" on their blog site.  That’s not enough to get me to stop using the reader though.  I still click through and visit the original sites occasionally.

I kind of feel like I’m cheating on Yahoo! a bit, because I have always loved Yahoo! but Google is starting to win my heart a little bit.

The One With No Title

Sometimes I really have to work hard not to totally spill my guts to the internet.  As honest as I tend to be here and as much as I say that I really shouldn’t, there are some things that are just not meant to be shared.  The really funny part is that if you met me in person, I would most likely not say more than "Um, hi."  But, if I can type it and share it with the whole world over the internet, I’m practically an open book.  I never would have thought that little shy me could talk so openly about my life with perfect strangers.  Of course, you really aren’t strangers because I read most of your blogs too, so I guess I kinda know you in a weird stalker sort of way.

So, I have about a gazillion things running through my head right now but I can’t share all of them.  Actually, I may not share much at all because in the time it took me to write that last paragraph I have forgotten the other things I wanted to write about.

While I try to remember the point of this post I will lead you elsewhere.  Just remember to come back when you are done.  During my morning blog readings I ran across a couple of things that made me very, very sad.  Ok, so I cried.  At work.  The first one is here.  That is what started me with the whole crying thing.  After I finished wiping away the tears, I went here and saw what Amanda is doing and again, I was touched.  I don’t have the extra funds today, but when I do I plan to go back and send in my donation.  If you have an extra buck or two, I would encourage you to do the same.

It really does amaze me just how much you can care about someone you have never met in real life.  When you read about someone’s struggles, hopes, fears, and even the mundane day-to-day happenings of their life, you get to know them.  You start to care about them.  They become your friends.  This phenomenon still amazes me.

And now, I must rush away because I just got an e-mail telling me my baby is sick and running a fever.  Hopefully I’ll come back and remember what I was planning on writing earlier because this totally drifted away from it.

Basketcase

Recently there seeems to be a surge of great bloggers who are getting paying gigs to blog.  For quite some time now I’ve admired some of the regulars at Blogging Baby and wondered if there would ever possibly be a chance that some day I might be able to do something like that.  In the last couple of weeks I’ve read about several people getting jobs at ClubMom and even AlphaMom

As I read about each one, I sit here in disbelief that these people are getting paid to blog.  Then I start dreaming and think, what if I could get paid to blog?  Quickly, reality sets in and I realize that I am nowhere near the status of these great bloggers who get hundreds of comments on every entry they post.  I’m lucky if I even get ten or fifteen visitors a day on my blog.  But everyone has to start out somewhere, right?

Today I did something that makes me nervous as heck.  I finally sucked up some courage and put in my application to one of those big multi-blog sites.  I keep telling myself not to get my hopes up, but I know that if I don’t at least try that I will always wonder, "what if?"  I don’t want to someday regret the fact that I sat here and didn’t chase after my dreams.

My fingers are officially crossed…

I need an intervention

Recently I have been adding a lot of new blogs to my blogroll (my personal bookmarks, not the list on this site cause I can’t seem to keep up with it).  The list has been growing so quickly that I can barely keep up with my daily reads anymore.  I have to make a choice every day which ones I am going to read and which ones I am going to skip.  That is a very difficult decision.

Finding new blogs has become an addiction with me.  I go to read my regulars and then I find links either in the posts or in the comments and I just can’t keep from clicking on them.  Sometimes I’m not real impressed with the content and click the little red x, but sometimes I get totally absorbed in the new site and add it to the blogroll.  That has been happening a lot lately.  And that is why my list is getting so long.  There are just way too many talented writers out there and I cannot say no.

Just a few weeks ago I went through and cleaned out my list.  There were a few that were no longer updating or that had simply lost my interest that I was able to remove.  The list was much shorter and much more manageable.  Then yesterday I started really looking at the list again and it is even longer now than it was before the clean-up.  Will somebody please send help?  This might explain why it has now taken me 10 months to read a real book (that I’m not quite finished with yet).

And, in other addiction news, I have found a new source to feed my music addiction.  It turns out that the new girl in the office has rather good taste in music and a rather decent sized cd collection as well.  She loaned me a couple of cds to check out today.  I see our friendship becoming much closer in the near future.  Well, even without the cd collection, she’s a pretty cool chick anyway.

Also, thank you to all of you who offered advice and suggestions about the money issues.  I’m hoping to implement some of your suggestions in the near future.  Have I told you lately how much I love you?

Memalicious

Because I don’t have anything really exciting or even slightly interesting to write about today, I decided to do this little meme.  Unless, of course, you want to hear about how miserable my allergies are making me.  Yeah, I didn’t think so.  I found this over at Average Jane’s blog.

1. Who is the last person you high-fived? Believe it or not, my dog high-fives me all the time.  It was actually one of the first tricks we taught him (right after sit I believe).

2. If you were drafted into a war, would you survive? Without my Tivo, Zach, or my laptop?  I think not.

3. Do you sleep with the TV on? Only when I fall asleep watching CSI.  They really should put that show on a little bit earlier!

4. Have you ever drunk milk out of the carton? No, can’t stand the stuff.

5. Have you ever won a spelling bee? Yep, several times.

6. Have you ever been stung by a bee? OUCH! Yes.

7. How fast can you type? Not sure, but pretty quick if you don’t count the typos.

8. Are you afraid of the dark? Only outside, or if I hear a creepy sound.

9. Eye color? Blue-green

10. Have you ever made out at a drive-in? Nope, never been to one.

11. When is the last time you chose a bath over a shower? Last Saturday.  Put the baby to bed, fixed myself a margarita, and told hubby not to disturb me or he would regret it for the next couple of weeks.

12. Do you knock on wood? No.

13. Do you floss daily? No, although I know I should.

14. Can you hula hoop? I used to be able to for about 15-20 seconds at a time when I was a kid.  Doubt I could now!

15. Are you good at keeping secrets? Yes.

16. What do you want for Christmas? Someone to anonymously pay off all my debt.

17. Do you know the Muffin Man? Nope, but I sure do love muffins.

18. Do you talk in your sleep? Nope, but both my ex-husband and my current husband have from time to time.  It totally cracks me up to see their face the next day when they find out what they said.

19. Who wrote the book of love? Obviously not me.

20. Have you ever flown a kite? Yes, but I was never vrey successful and, quite frankly, never cared much for it.

21. Do you wish on your fallen lashes? Nope..

22. Do you consider yourself successful? In my work life, no.  In my family life, yes (have you seen the gorgeous pictures of that boy?).

23. How many people are on your contact list of your cell? My guess would be around 75 and that was after cleaning it out when I got my new phone in December.

24. Have you ever asked for a pony? Not that I remember, but growing up we had a Shetland pony that lived with our "adopted" grandparents in Texas.  I always loved visiting them because we got to ride and take care of the pony.

25. Plans for tomorrow? TGIF!  Work (of course) then hanging out with friends and possibly drinking some margaritas.

26. Can you juggle? With two items but not more.

27. Missing someone now?  I think I’m pretty much always missing somebody.  But, when I’m at work, it’s Zach I miss the most.

28. When was the last time you told someone, "I love you?" When I dropped Zach off at day care this morning.

29. And truly meant it? … I always mean it if I say it.

30. How often do you drink? Not often since I found out I was pregnant with Zach.  Now about once every week or two I might have a couple margaritas.

31. How are you feeling today? Tired and bitchy due to the aforementioned allergies.

32. What do you say too much? Stinker Butt (somehow Zach picked that up as a nickname)

33. Have you ever been suspended or expelled from school? Nope, I was a good girl.

34. What are you looking forward to? SUMMER, our trip to Phoenix for hubby’s brother’s wedding, and Zach’s first birthday party.

35. Have you ever crawled through a window? Yep, when I was little my mom was always managing to lock herself out of the house.  We spent a lot of time climbing through the windows.  The night hubby and I moved into our house we managed to lock ourselves out and had to break a window and crawl through to get in.  Fortunately, hubby volunteered for the crawling that time.

36. Have you ever eaten dog food? No, but Zach sure has tried getting his hands on it a few times.

37. Can you handle the truth? Yes, in most cases.  Other times I just choose to ignore it.

38. Do you like green eggs and ham? Not sure I could eat it.  I am so picky about food and if it looks funny I’m probably not going to eat it.

39. Any cool scars?  I woudn’t say that they are cool, but I have three major scars that are visible.  One really nasty looking one on my tummy from surgery, another on my wrist from surgery, and one just above my ankle from a friend’s dog.
