2 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 1 husband – life isn’t perfect, but it is what we make it

Birthday Girl

Today is my friend Amy’s 28th Birthday.  Amy and I first met when we were 13 years old.  I had just moved to the neighborhood and she came over, along with another girl our age, and invited me to go swimming with them at her dad’s house.  I was shy and nervous as hell, but I decided to go.  I was also pasty white and burned easily and after an afternoon in the pool had turned red and blistery.  That was the beginning of what has turned out to be a life-long friendship.

Amy is the one friend in my life who has always been there for me.  Like every good relationship, there have been many ups and downs and probably times where she hated me.  I was a bit of a selfish bitch in my younger days (ok, so maybe I still am sometimes). But, when I really needed a friend, she was there.

A few years ago, Amy moved far, far, away to Oregon and now I only get to see her a couple of times a year.  I miss her being around, but I always enjoy her visits.  I just wish they were a little more frequent.

So, really what I want to say here is HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMY! Thank you for being my friend all these years.  Oh, and come back and visit soon!

The Urge Is Back

Friday night we found out that a friend of ours was playing a show with his new band on Saturday.  It seems like eons ago now, but once upon a time hubby and I were really into the local band scene.  We had friends that were in a band and we used to go see them play, along with several other bands that we got to know. A few of the bands we liked split up, I got pregnant, and since then we haven’t really been a part of that scene.

So, when this came up, we decided it would be fun to go check them out.  We called my mom up and she agreed to baby-sit so we could go out for a few hours.  We dusted off our "going out" clothes, got dressed, and I even put on a little bit of make-up.

As I walked into the bar, I had the feeling of being totally out of my element.  I can’t remember the last time we went out to a place like that.  After a few minutes our friends showed up that we were meeting there and I started to relax a bit.  As soon as the band started playing, I felt right at home.  Well, except for the smoke that had already managed to kick my allergies into overdrive.

My friend’s band was actually pretty good.  I wasn’t really sure what to expect from them.  It was their first show and they were all a bit nervous, but totally excited at the same time.  The music was great.  The only thing I wasn’t totally sold on was the singer.  He had a great singing voice but there was something about his attitude and mannerisms that I just couldn’t get past.

After they finished we decided to stick around and watch the next band.  I wasn’t really impressed with them, but they did have an awesome bass player who was also so incredibly hot that I couldn’t take my eyes off of him.  The consensus of all the girls around me was that the band wasn’t that great, but well worth listening to just to watch the bass player.

By the time we left, hubby and I were both ready to go home and jam it up on our guitars.  Watching the bands play and feeling the energy of the music really inspired me to want to play again.  Once upon a time I had dreams of actually being in a band.  However, my guitar is one of the hobbies that went by the wayside when I got pregnant and I really miss it.  I am now determined to find some time to pick it up again, even if I have to play unplugged after Zach goes to bed.

We ended up leaving before the last band because, well, we’re getting old.  Hubby and I were both pretty tired and knew that we had to get up early the next morning, plus we were already going to lose an hour of sleep with the whole Daylight Savings Time thing.

All in all, it was a pretty fun night.  It made me realize just how much I missed the live music.

For the Love of Target

Recently, well about 4 months or so ago, they opened a new Target store near where I work.  There is another one just as close in the opposite direction, but the new Target totally kicks the old Target’s butt.  My first experience in that store was when I was doing my Christmas shopping.  I had a list of things I wanted to get Zach for Christmas and in less than an hour I found every single thing on that list.

Normally, I tend to be more of a Wal-Mart girl because I usually find that things are a bit cheaper there, but I may have been officially converted today.  I needed to pick up some formula for Zach and since I had a $10 off coupon for the formula, I figured it didn’t really matter where I bought it.  But, as I looked down the formula aisle, I saw something interesting.  Target has a store-brand formula that is HALF the price of the name brand I usually buy.  And guess what?  If you check out the ingredients and nutritional information on the back, they are almost exactly the same.  Close enough anyway that I will chance it to spend half the money I have been spending to keep the boy in formula.  My checkbook has seriously been hurting since I stopped breastfeeding.

Not only did I find the cheaper formula, I was also shopping for some Easter goodies for Zach.  Guess what?  They had E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. that was on my list once again.  I should also mention that I looked for these same things at Wal-Mart just last week and couldn’t find them.  I also got Zach a very cute little man looking outfit for Easter Sunday.  It was a little bit pricier that what I really wanted to pay, but not enough to make me put it back.

I may not quite be the Target enthusiast that she is, but I think I’m well on my way.

Memalicious

Because I don’t have anything really exciting or even slightly interesting to write about today, I decided to do this little meme.  Unless, of course, you want to hear about how miserable my allergies are making me.  Yeah, I didn’t think so.  I found this over at Average Jane’s blog.

1. Who is the last person you high-fived? Believe it or not, my dog high-fives me all the time.  It was actually one of the first tricks we taught him (right after sit I believe).

2. If you were drafted into a war, would you survive? Without my Tivo, Zach, or my laptop?  I think not.

3. Do you sleep with the TV on? Only when I fall asleep watching CSI.  They really should put that show on a little bit earlier!

4. Have you ever drunk milk out of the carton? No, can’t stand the stuff.

5. Have you ever won a spelling bee? Yep, several times.

6. Have you ever been stung by a bee? OUCH! Yes.

7. How fast can you type? Not sure, but pretty quick if you don’t count the typos.

8. Are you afraid of the dark? Only outside, or if I hear a creepy sound.

9. Eye color? Blue-green

10. Have you ever made out at a drive-in? Nope, never been to one.

11. When is the last time you chose a bath over a shower? Last Saturday.  Put the baby to bed, fixed myself a margarita, and told hubby not to disturb me or he would regret it for the next couple of weeks.

12. Do you knock on wood? No.

13. Do you floss daily? No, although I know I should.

14. Can you hula hoop? I used to be able to for about 15-20 seconds at a time when I was a kid.  Doubt I could now!

15. Are you good at keeping secrets? Yes.

16. What do you want for Christmas? Someone to anonymously pay off all my debt.

17. Do you know the Muffin Man? Nope, but I sure do love muffins.

18. Do you talk in your sleep? Nope, but both my ex-husband and my current husband have from time to time.  It totally cracks me up to see their face the next day when they find out what they said.

19. Who wrote the book of love? Obviously not me.

20. Have you ever flown a kite? Yes, but I was never vrey successful and, quite frankly, never cared much for it.

21. Do you wish on your fallen lashes? Nope..

22. Do you consider yourself successful? In my work life, no.  In my family life, yes (have you seen the gorgeous pictures of that boy?).

23. How many people are on your contact list of your cell? My guess would be around 75 and that was after cleaning it out when I got my new phone in December.

24. Have you ever asked for a pony? Not that I remember, but growing up we had a Shetland pony that lived with our "adopted" grandparents in Texas.  I always loved visiting them because we got to ride and take care of the pony.

25. Plans for tomorrow? TGIF!  Work (of course) then hanging out with friends and possibly drinking some margaritas.

26. Can you juggle? With two items but not more.

27. Missing someone now?  I think I’m pretty much always missing somebody.  But, when I’m at work, it’s Zach I miss the most.

28. When was the last time you told someone, "I love you?" When I dropped Zach off at day care this morning.

29. And truly meant it? … I always mean it if I say it.

30. How often do you drink? Not often since I found out I was pregnant with Zach.  Now about once every week or two I might have a couple margaritas.

31. How are you feeling today? Tired and bitchy due to the aforementioned allergies.

32. What do you say too much? Stinker Butt (somehow Zach picked that up as a nickname)

33. Have you ever been suspended or expelled from school? Nope, I was a good girl.

34. What are you looking forward to? SUMMER, our trip to Phoenix for hubby’s brother’s wedding, and Zach’s first birthday party.

35. Have you ever crawled through a window? Yep, when I was little my mom was always managing to lock herself out of the house.  We spent a lot of time climbing through the windows.  The night hubby and I moved into our house we managed to lock ourselves out and had to break a window and crawl through to get in.  Fortunately, hubby volunteered for the crawling that time.

36. Have you ever eaten dog food? No, but Zach sure has tried getting his hands on it a few times.

37. Can you handle the truth? Yes, in most cases.  Other times I just choose to ignore it.

38. Do you like green eggs and ham? Not sure I could eat it.  I am so picky about food and if it looks funny I’m probably not going to eat it.

39. Any cool scars?  I woudn’t say that they are cool, but I have three major scars that are visible.  One really nasty looking one on my tummy from surgery, another on my wrist from surgery, and one just above my ankle from a friend’s dog.

9 Months

(originally written March 26, 2006)

Dear Zachary,

Today you turned nine months old. Up until now, things have been relatively easy with you. When a mom chooses to have a baby, they understand that there will sometimes be bad days. But, when you have nine months of having a mostly pleasant, cheerful baby and then three days of having a baby who completely tests your patience it kinda throws you for a loop. The last three days (all on the weekend of course) have been, um, let’s just say…unpleasant. I’m totally blaming it on the teething right now, but even I don’t believe that’s all it is. I only hope that we can find a middle ground sometime soon or I am certain that I will go completely crazy.

I don’t blame you too much for being on edge because the last month has been anything but normal in our lives. The day after your 8-month birthday your daddy got a very sad phone call. We found out that day that your Uncle Josh had died. The news was quite a shock to me and Daddy. We packed up everything we needed and left the next morning to go to Louisiana to be with our family. Mommy’s boss was very nice and let us take the company plane down there so you got to experience your very first airplane ride.

Even though we were there for such a sad occasion, it was really nice to see all of Daddy’s family again. You got to meet your Uncle Matt and Aunt Maria for the first time. Just between you and me, I think you charmed the socks off of them. We even went to a Mardi Gras parade, which was a first for Mommy too. When we headed back home, everyone came to the airport to see us off. We kinda felt like rock stars haivng such a crowd there (Daddy really liked that part).

I spent a lot of time that week thinking about how much Uncle Josh loved you and how much he enjoyed holding you and playing with you. I wish that you were old enough to remember those times, but I know you aren’t. They are wonderful memories for me however, and some day I will get to share those with you.

Right after we got back from Louisiana, for some reason you started sleeping. I don’t know how or why because you barely slept the week before. The day we got home you decided to give Mommy and Daddy a great present and slept ALL NIGHT LONG. Since then, it comes and goes. Some nights you sleep all night and other nights you wake up around 3:00 or 4:00 wanting a bottle…yes, I said bottle.

That is another big change that we have recently made. As of this week, we are officially done with the whole breastfeeding thing. I had been gradually reducing the number of feedings and replacing them with bottles of formula, but all of a sudden you busted out a couple of teeth and I quickly figured out that teeth and boobs don’t mix well. You now have two teeth on the top and two on the bottom and they are all quite sharp. Last weekend you started getting frustrated when you were nursing and I figured out that you just weren’t getting enough milk from me anymore. On Monday, I decided that it really wasn’t worth trying anymore and started fixing you bottles instead. You didn’t seem to miss it much until today when were wanting comforting and grabbed at my shirt.

Speaking of needing comfort, for some reason you decided that you wanted to try out the stairs at day care last week. I got a call from Aliesha right after I got to work one day saying that I needed to come pick you up. Apparently one of the other kids had taken down the baby gate and you decided it would be fun to take a tumble down the stairs. You were very lucky and only ended up with a small cut in your mouth. I looked you over for a couple of days and didn’t find a single bruise on your body. So when you started heading for the stairs at Grandpa’s house today I may have overreacted just a little bit and yelled a little too loud. You just move entirely too fast.

Even after nine months, you still have me so intrigued every day. I could sit and watch you forever just to see what you are going to do next. Today I sat you down in a laundry basket and pushed you around the floor while you laughed and laughed. For a few seconds I forgot just how cranky you had been all day.

You are growing up so fast that I can barely keep up. It is amazing that you have learned so much in only nine short months. Today I held a baby that was only one week old and was reminded just how far you have come. Just thinking of it now almost brings a tear to my eye…almost.

Every day that I am with you I am so thankful that God chose me to be your mother. You are so perfect (even when you are cranky). I don’t think a minute goes by that I don’t think about you in some way. I hope that you never, ever forget how much I love you.

Love,
Mama
