Bon Bon Cupcakes Review and Giveaway

This contest has now ended

Nearly a year ago, maybe more, I was searching for some local people to follow on Twitter. One of the names I came across was Bon BonCupcakes and I simply had to check it out.  With a name like that you have to be curious, right?  I followed the link to her web site and found the cutest leggings I’ve ever seen! I wanted to buy some right then and there, but stopped myself before my clicker finger got too happy.  Quite honestly, I stopped myself because of the price.  Considering Evie would be growing like crazy during her first year, I decided it would be better to wait until she was just a little bit bigger and could wear the leggings longer.

IMG_8495Well, lucky for me, the ladies at Bon Bon Cupcakes were gracious enough to send me a sample of their adorable leggings to try out on Evie.  And let me tell you, they are just as cute in person as the pictures on the web site.  The leggings come rolled up in the shape of a cupcake and in a clear cupcake box.  Also included is a “recipe card” for the leggings with the story of how Bon Bon Cupcakes was started by Marianne Cascone and Erin Cascone, two stay-at-home moms, on the back.

The leggings are made of a thick (but not too thick) microfiber material that is much more sturdy than most of the other tights my daughter has.  She was still crawling when we first tried them out, so she really tested the durability.  The ribbon ruffles around the bottom are adorable and stayed attached even with my daughter pulling and tugging on them.  They have been through the washer and dryer several times now and still look just like they did the day we opened the package.  Considering how well they hold up, I would say they are definitely worth the price.

IMG_8489Since Evie was just on the upper end of the 9-18 month size, I requested the 2-4T so she would have a little room to grow.  Even buying her a size up, it seemed like the sizing runs just a little bit small.  I would have expected a 2-4T to be just a little big on her since she was wearing 18 month size clothing, but they actually fit her just right.  I’m pretty sure they won’t make it up to a 4T size on her.  They are very stretchy, but were a bit tight around her belly.

Besides the adorable leggings, I love that BonBon Cupcakes is a local company and that it all started with a mom who was simply trying to come up with something to cover her daughter’s diaper.  Other moms of daughters can certainly commiserate with this.  I know I’ve been there!

Hairbows are Addictive

I seriously never thought I would be the type of mom to dress my girl in frilly dresses, make her purses, and put bows in her hair.  (Of course I also never expected my daughter to have such little hair at a year old.)  Guess that just proves that motherhood really does make you a bit crazy!  I finally got a little bit of down time on Sunday and this is how I spent it.

More Hairbows

I’ve been collecting ribbon here and there for a while now but never could find the time to sit down and make these.  It was a great way to spend my little bit of extra time.  It still surprises me how much joy I get from making things with my hands!

Tutorial: Toddler Purse

Toddler Purse Tutorial

My mom and I have been searching all over for some little toddler sized purses for my daughter and my niece with no luck. I did find some on the dollar aisle at Target, but I’m sure they would be torn to shreds in no time. My mom wanted to give them to the girls as Easter gifts, but we just never could find the right thing so I decided to pick up some fabric that would match their Easter dresses and make them instead.

Since we looked all over for them and never did find any, I figured there has to be someone else out there looking for the same thing. I decided I would share how I made these in a tutorial so no little girls have to go without purses. 😉

(My apologies ahead of time for the horrible pictures. I had terrible lighting where I was working.)

Supplies:
2 pieces of fabric 9 x 12 inches (fat quarters would work great for this)
2 pieces lightweight interfacing (iron-on)
approx 1 yard of 1 inch wide grosgrain ribbon in coordinating color
coordinating thread
fabric pencil or marker
fabric glue (optional for making bow)

  1. Cut fabric and interfacing into two 9×12 inch rectangles each. Iron interfacing onto wrong sides of fabric.

  3. Take one piece of fabric and pin a 9 in. strip of ribbon onto each end approximately 1 in. from edge.

  5. Sew along the very edges of ribbon.

  7. Make bow with ribbon and attach on top of ribbon stripe. I made a simple loop bow and attached it by sewing just under the top loop.

  9. Fold in half length wise with right sides facing. Pin sides and seam with 1/2 in. seam allowance, leaving top open. Repeat with second fabric piece to make the lining.

  11. Open seams and iron flat, making a point on the bottom edge.

  13. Flatten bottom corners. Measure up 1/2 inch from point and draw straight line to box corners. Seam across line on all four corners.

  15. Turn lining so that the right side is facing out.
  16. Cut 12 inches of ribbon and pin one end along the top edge of each side, centering with seams. Sew ribbon to lining with about a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

  18. Insert lining into outer bag with right sides facing (ribbon strap should be inside between the two layers). Pin around top edge to hold the lining and outer bag together.

  20. Seam around top edge, leaving about a 3 inch opening to turn bag right side out.
  21. Gently turn bag inside out through opening. Fold liner into outer bag.
  22. Iron around top edge to flatten, then topseam around edge.

Another Pillowcase Dress

Saturday night I took my sister to JoAnn’s to find some fabric for some curtains she wants made.  I thought I was doing a really great job of not picking up any extras, but we stayed in the store just a little bit too long.  I ended up picking up a couple of fabric quarters, some ribbon, and bias tape to make Evie another little pillowcase dress.  The quarters were just the right size to make her a dress and a matching headband.

This dress is a little bit longer than the Halloween dresses.  I’m hoping Evie can wear it at least through the next Spring and maybe even Summer.  I love the fabric (if you look closely a few of the flowers have aqua colored centers) and I think the bias tape around the arm holes and the bottom really gives it a finished look.  I also made the headband a little differently this time and I think I like it better than the other ones.

What do you think?  I would love to see more pictures of pillowcase dresses if anyone else has made any.  These are so simple and I have lots of ideas for little embellishments!

If anyone is still wanting to purchase a Halloween tote bag please get your order in now! Orders must be in by 5:00 p.m. Friday to ensure arrival before Halloween!
