Through the Lens

IMG_0651

I’ve been missing my camera lately. It has been sitting on the shelf, packed safely inside my bag pretty much since we came home from our vacation. I did take it out to snap a few photos when my cousin and her family were visiting, but I haven’t taken the time to really photograph anything. I’ve been looking at some amazingly creative photos online recently, and have felt discouraged that I don’t have the time to experiment with my camera the way I would like to. Then I though about just how long my camera has been sitting on that shelf. Huh.

After dinner last night, I decided I was just going to shoot. Maybe just a few lifestyle type snapshots of the kids – anything just to get my finger clicking again. Since Zach refuses to let me take his photo, I ended up snapping 20-30 quick shots of Evie. A few of her playing with Thomas the Train set, then we went outside and she played in the yard while I snapped a few more.

My Sunshine

I realized later, while I was looking through the photos I shot, that I’ve been missing out on a lot of her smiles lately as well. I’ve been tired and short-tempered lately, and that is probably only going to get worse over the next 6 months or so. Giving her a few minutes of my undivided attention made her so happy.

Sometimes, it really is the small things that matter the most. Funny how sometimes I see things so much more clearly when I’m looking through the lens.

Thankful

I am feeling loved this morning. I finally set up my Dee Perrin Photography & Design facebook page last night and then had to beg for “Likes” from people so I could get my much nicer looking url set up (facebook.com/deeperrinphotography). For some stupid reason, Facebook requires you to have at least 25 Likes before you can change the url from their standard string of numbers and letters. In less than an hour I had the required 25, and was able to make the change. Thanks to all of you who helped out. I’m well beyond the 25 now, and it makes my heart happy.

As far as photography goes, I’m still feeling like a tiny little fish in a very big ocean. I’m learning so much and constantly improving my skills, but there is so much more that I feel like I’ll never know it all. It is taking a lot of time and a lot of effort. It is all worth it though when I realize just how much fun I’m having. I finally feel like I’m doing something that I’m meant to do. I know I’ll never make millions, but I feel like I’m being led in this direction for some reason.

A couple of weeks ago, I finally got a chance to do a newborn photo session. Little Ryker was just over 2 weeks old and we had quite a time trying to get him into that nice, deep sleep that allows posing. Finally, after a couple of nursing sessions with Mama, he gave in and I was able to get some great shots of him.  This one in particular has gotten a lot of comments from friends and family.

Ryker - Newborn Photo Session
Then last weekend, I got to do a 1-Year session for Levi and Joseph, who were the first babies (outside of my own family) that I ever photographed. I think the first session with them was when they were around 6 weeks old and I can’t believe how fast they have grown up! We did a fun cake smash session at a local park and had a great time!

Joseph - 1 Year Cake Smash Photo Session

I just realized neither one of them looks very happy in these photos, but I assure you they were! They were just too busy eating that cake!

After every session that I do, I come home exhausted and tremendously happy that I get to do this thing. I’m so thankful for the bonus that finally allowed me to buy the DSLR camera I had been dreaming of. I’m thankful for the friends and family that have allowed me to practice on them over and over and over again. I’m thankful that my husband is supportive of this dream I have, even though he would like to see my face aimed at him more and at the computer screen less. I’m thankful that there are so many free resources online that have allowed me to learn much faster than I could have on my own. I’m thankful that God has bestowed on me both the means and the ability that allow me to follow this dream.

Most of all, I’m thankful for the friends and family who believe in me. I still have so far to go and without the support of the people I love the most, I’ll never make it.

The Nephews

If you’ve been reading along for any amount of time, you know that I spend a lot of time with my nephews. My sister and I are really close and our kids are constantly begging to see each other. It is rare when we don’t see them at least once on the weekends. My sister asked me months ago if I would do the boys’ photos for their birthdays this year and we finally found a day to do them. I think they turned out pretty good, but as always, I learned that there are a few things I should do differently next time.

All Around the Mulberry Bush

Seeing as it has been nearly a month since I wrote anything here, I suppose it is time to get my fingers back to the keyboard and share some earth-shattering news. Except, I don’t have any. Well, nothing earth-shattering anyway. I’ve been busy and just generally overwhelmed with life these last few weeks, which seems to happen often. One of these days I swear I’m going to get my act together.

First off, I am a bad, bad, mommy blogger. I let my beautiful baby girl’s 3rd birthday go by without so much as a mention on my blog. I’ve wanted to post something about it, but just haven’t had the time or the words to do so. She had an excellent birthday, with a super fun Dora Fairytale Adventure birthday party. This was the first year she got to invite friends to her party (we’ve done family only parties before). A friend of mine who is starting up a party planning business helped plan it, and it was much better than my standard at-home birthday parties. The birthday girl certainly enjoyed it!

Behind the scenes, I’ve been working on getting my photography business set up. I’m definitely not a pro yet, but I’m taking some little steps to make things legal. I filed my d.b.a. a few months ago, and just last week set up a separate business checking account so that I can track my income/expenses. I’m also working on some marketing/branding stuff so that when I’m ready it will just be a matter of sending it off to the printer. I still have a few more things to do to feel like I’m official, but I am legal enough to be in business at this point. I’m just nervous about making that jump. I absolutely love photography, but I know I still have a lot to learn. I’m hoping to get a few more (non-family member) sessions in over the next couple of months. I’ve pretty much exhausted my kids and my niece/nephews with all of the photo taking. Here’s one of my favorites that I took of my niece a few weeks ago.

I still see imperfections in every photo I take, so I know I need more practice. However, I also know I love nearly every portrait ever taken of my kids – perfect or not – so maybe I can make it fly. I’m a little stuck in the “I need more practice to take better photographs, but I need better photographs to get people to want to hire me so I can get more practice” conundrum. Or maybe I just need more friends willing to loan me their kids.

On top of all that, I’m still stressing out about summer day care for Zach. I pretty much just stopped looking because I needed to just stop and breathe for a while. Sadly, ignoring it is not making it go away. The end of May is coming up very quickly.

Oh, and then there’s the really fun thing that happened on Friday – my car blew up! Well, it may have actually been easier if it did blow up, but it is broken (again) and undriveable until we get it fixed. I’m ready to trade it in, which we most likely will do, but not so ready to have to make car payments again. In the meantime, I’m driving hubby’s car, which we just had to put new tires on and he thinks needs a new starter. It works most of the time, but every once in a while just decides it doesn’t want to go. Kind of makes me wish we lived in a city where cars were not a necessity.

There are so many other things, but not enough time in the world to write it all out. My lunch hour just does not last long enough.

In the Eye of the Beholder

I had an off day today. Not a bad day, just a blah kind of day. A mixture of Spring fever and poor food choices most likely. But, it was a beautiful day so I decided to take the kids by the park after I picked them up tonight. They have been begging to go to the park for over a week now, so I figured we might as well get it in before the weather gets cruddy again.

I didn’t plan on taking pictures, but at the last minute I grabbed my little camera out of my purse for a few snapshots. I got a lot of blurry pics of the kids running and playing, but I managed to capture one that I just absolutely love. Evie wanted to get on the tire swing, and Zach came to join her a couple minutes later. I asked Evie to lean in close to Zach and I got my new favorite photo.

The photo isn’t perfect by any means. The focus is a little fuzzy. Zach’s glasses are tilted funny. There’s a pole coming out of Evie’s head. But to this mom of two kids who spend probably 75% of their time together these days fighting, it is a perfect photo because it proves there was a moment in time when everyone was smiling and happy.

This is why I love photography. Getting this photo changed my entire mood for the day. Well, maybe a little time out in the warm sunshine helped too.

The Longest Short Month

Months

Well, that was the longest short month ever. I’m so happy that we’ve finally made it to March. It seems like my birthday was ages ago, when really, it has only been 3 weeks. I feel like I’ve gone through most of it in a daze. I spent nearly a week sleeping after my surgery, then spent the next week in a mad rush to get things caught up at work. Now that I finally feel like I can breathe again at work, my house is a mess and the laundry is piling up. Oh, how I miss my mother-in-law!

I had my 2-week check up today with my doctor and everything is looking good. I was a little concerned about one of my incisions, but she seems to think it looks okay and told me to put some neosporin on it a couple times a day. She said I can go back to normal activity as I feel up to it, as long as I don’t overdo it. I didn’t tell her I’ve been pushing myself to that point for over a week now. She obviously does not know my kids or how much energy they require.

And now, in order to rescue this extremely insightful post, here are cute photos of my kids that I took last week.
