I Can't Hug Them Tight Enough

Tonight my heart is broken.  It is broken for Maddie and for Thalon.  It is broken for their parents, siblings, families,  friends, and everyone who knew and loved these two amazing kids.  This just isn’t supposed to happen.

I cried when I read about Maddie on Twitter.  It’s a nightmare, my nightmare, the worst thing I can ever imagine.  No one should ever lose a child.  It’s more pain than anyone should ever have to bear.

I know these things happen every day, but it isn’t every day that I read about it.  It isn’t every day that I read a first-hand account of the worst thing that I can possibly imagine.  That’s the amazing thing about the blogging community.  Somehow it makes it all more real.  I guess that’s why it hurt even more to read about Thalon today.  The tears started rolling and I had an uncontrollable urge to hug my daughter tight.  She’s only a few months younger than Maddie and a little less than a year older than Thalon.  The reality that I could wake up someday and not have her here was just too much.

I see reports of children dying on the news, either because they are sick or some horrible tragedy happens and even though it saddens me, it has never quite hit home like the tragedies that happened this week.  It hurts so bad.  It makes me question so many things – like why my life is so good and why my children are so perfectly healthy.  It makes me question why I take these things for granted so often.

Tonight I’m hugging my kids extra tight, kissing them, and making sure they know just how much I love them and just how grateful I am to have them in my life.  If ever tomorrow doesn’t come – for me or for them – I want to make sure they know that they are my world and I would never be the same without them.

My heart is forever changed.  It may not be completely broken, but it will never be the same again.  It hurts for every parent who has ever lost a child…and I know there are many.  They are all in my thoughts and prayers tonight.

The online community has truly amazed me over the last few days.  You can’t go on Twitter without seeing the hashtags for #maddie and #thalon.  These babies, these families are so loved.  So many have donated to March of Dimes, donated to help cover medical and funeral expenses, donated their time and energy to help in whatever way they can.  Even though I sit over here in my own little corner of the web most days, I’m proud to be part of a community that cares so much about each other.  It gives me a little hope in a world filled with sadness.

There is nothing that can take away the grief that these families are surely feeling, but if you want to help relieve some of the financial burdens that these families are facing, please follow the links below and donate what you can.

Happy Easter!

easter 2009

I hope everyone had a fabulous Easter. Even though Hubby had to be on call for work, the kids and I went down to my Dad’s to celebrate Easter with my family. It was fun (and chaotic) watching all the kids hunt eggs and rummage through their baskets. Tonight I’m exhausted, but feeling blessed. Now I just wish I had a day off tomorrow to recover.

Germy, Germy, Germs

Zach's Curly/Spikey Do

This adorable little boy? He got me sick. He looks so harmless, but the truth is he is full of icky germs and likes to spread them to his Mama. He started running a fever just before bedtime on Thursday night but had no other symptoms. The fever was mysteriously gone Friday morning and he didn’t show any signs of being sick. Of course Evie started the fever Friday morning so I ended up staying home with both of them.

Saturday night we went to Disney on Ice (which was awesome except for the part where Evie didn’t want to sit still and I had to take her out to walk around) where we shared our $8 popcorn and $4 bottle of pop.

Sunday morning Zach woke up a stuffy, sneezy, coughing mess (he may have been coughing and sneezing a little Sat. night but I just assumed it was allergies with the crazy weather we’ve had). And so did I, with an emphasis on the coughing. And then I sent him to day care that way today because I already missed work on Friday. Yes, I’m that mom. I know. Chances are he got it there anyway.

Fortunately, Evie seems to have escaped the cough of death. I? Feel like my throat is on fire and I’m pretty sure Zach does too since I’ve been listening to him hack and cough in bed for over two hours now.

The sad part is that I can’t drug up either one of us since I’m still breastfeeding (though rarely these days) and all those reports about kids’ cold/cough medicine scared me away from giving Zach anything.  I guess we’ll just spend the night coughing together.

P.S.  But seriously? How cute is his hair all spiked up like that?  I love it!

P.P.S.  Here’s a little bonus video of Evie walking the corridor at Kemper during Disney on Ice.  She’s getting awfully good at it!

P.P.P.S. If you haven’t been over there lately, go over to Getting Crafty and see what I’ve been making!

Hairbows are Addictive

I seriously never thought I would be the type of mom to dress my girl in frilly dresses, make her purses, and put bows in her hair.  (Of course I also never expected my daughter to have such little hair at a year old.)  Guess that just proves that motherhood really does make you a bit crazy!  I finally got a little bit of down time on Sunday and this is how I spent it.

More Hairbows

I’ve been collecting ribbon here and there for a while now but never could find the time to sit down and make these.  It was a great way to spend my little bit of extra time.  It still surprises me how much joy I get from making things with my hands!

I ♥ Faces – Week 13 – My Friend and I

I missed out on last week’s I ♥ Faces weekly challenge (even though I had an adorable pet photo I meant to post). This week’s theme is “My Friend and I” and I didn’t want to miss this one! My entry for the kids photo is of Zach and his cousin Ryan. They are best buds and Zach constantly begs me to go to Ry-Ry’s house to play. This was taken during at trip to Deanna Rose Farmstead, one of our favorite places to visit.

For the adult category, I have this photo of my husband and I at our friends’ wedding reception. It is one of my favorite photos of the two of us even though the lighting was pretty horrible.
