Instant Knowledge

I can’t remember what movie it was on, but it was one of those sci-fi futuristic type movies where a person could plug into a machine and they could instantly learn years worth of knowledge on a certain subject. I wish I had one of those machines. I love having my blog on Moveable Type, but there is so much to learn about it. My knowledge of web design is pretty much limited to html and css. I don’t know much of anything about perl, php, java, or any other scripting languages. This has become a bit of a problem. Moveable Type and other blogging programs run on scripts.

I can install and use MT just fine. I love the way it works. Where I run into problems is when MT doesn’t do what it is supposed to. I’m very limited in the troubleshooting that I can do myself and when you are using the free personal edition, you don’t have access to much support other than the forums. I have run into problems twice now.

The first problem came with an install to my family website. I was attempting to install MT and then to migrate my WordPress blog to MT. As far as I can tell, the install was done correctly but when I try to run the program I keep getting a 500 internal server error. I have checked everything that is mentioned in the MT Knowledge Base, but still cannot get it to run. I put a post in the forums and have not had any replies. I’m getting a bit frustrated about it.

Then this morning, I installed a plug-in that I could not get to work. Somehow, after messing around with it for quite some time I did something that fixed it, although it was by mistake and I’m still not quite sure what I did.

I really wish that I had the time to learn more about all of this stuff. I have a feeling my limited knowledge will soon be completely outdated and I don’t have the time or energy to keep myself up to date.

Christmas in September

Over the weekend I went shopping for my husband’s birthday present. He’s always hard to buy for, but a blogging friend had a great suggestion and it just happened to be something he’s wanted for a while. She suggested a surround sound system.

So, I started my search online to see where I could find the best prices. I looked around and found the one that I wanted at Sam’s Club. Since we had to move everything out of the living room for our carpet to be installed today, I thought it would be a good idea to give it to him a little early so he could set it up when we put the living room back together. When we got home from church yesterday I told him I needed to run a quick errand and went down to Sam’s to pick it up.

While I was there, I saw that they had a 47-inch wide-screen tv on sale for $775. It was the same one that my brother bought a few months ago so I knew it was pretty good. It was marked down because it was the last one they had and was the display model.

I came home and gave hubby his surround sound system (which he was thrilled about) and told him about the tv. He’s been saving some money back for a while for a big screen tv and had $500 already to put toward it. We decided that he could put the rest of it on his visa and that would be our Christmas presents to each other for this year. So. he headed down to Sam’s with our brother-in-law to pick it up. When he got to the register to pay for it, they told him that they don’t accept visa cards so he didn’t get it.

He came home and told me what happened and we decided we were probably better off to wait a while anyway. As the night went on, we kept thinking about it and decided to check around and see what kind of prices we could find elsewhere. We looked online and found a 52-inch projection tv for $999 and after talking about it for a while decided to go ahead and get it. They have a no interest for 24 months deal going on right now and free delivery which I thought was a pretty good deal.

So, Christmas for us will be in September this year. I can’t complain though, because we will have a pretty sweet set-up once we get it all hooked up. I can’t wait!

LOST

Putting TV shows on DVD has got to have been one of the best ideas ever. Watching the whole season straight through without any commercials or waiting is definitely the best way to watch TV.

When the show LOST came out last season, my husband and I really wanted to watch it but we missed the first couple of episodes. We were disappointed because we had heard great things about it, but we didn’t want to start watching it after missing the beginning. So, last week I saw that it was out on DVD and decided I would pick it up sometime.

Friday night we went to hang out with some friends and they had rented the first couple of discs. We decided that since we were planning on watching them anyway, we would watch the first two shows with them. Well, we ended up watching the first 4 before we finally turned it off and went home. The next day, my husband went to Blockbuster and picked up the rest of them. Since then, almost all of my free time has been spent watching LOST. We finally finished up the last 4 episodes lastnight around 11:00.

I have to say that LOST is probably one of the best shows on TV in the last couple of years. The first episode was so intense I had to remind myself to breathe more than once. Now I’m anxious for season 2 to start next week. It will be pretty tough to have to wait a whole week between episodes though!

If you haven’t watched it I strongly suggest you go get the first season and watch it this weekend!

self-control

I should not let myself work on my web sites while I am at work. I get all wrapped up in it and forget that I’m supposed to be working! I just realized that I have now spent at least 3 hours on personal stuff today. Eventually someone’s going to figure me out.

Baby-safe floors

Yesterday my boss was in a rather good mood. My mom decided it would be a good time to talk to him about the carpet in the house that I rent from him. The carpet is pretty old and nasty throughout the entire house. Even when it has just been cleaned it is still pretty gross. Before I had the baby it wasn’t that big of a deal, but knowing that he’ll be down there crawling around on it in a few months has me trying to find a way to replace the living room carpet at the very least.

My mom went in and talked to my boss. She has a way of convincing him to do thigs that we want sometimes. She talked him into letting me use one month’s rent to buy carpet for my living room and hallway. My boss called a guy he knows that owns a carpet store and talked to him about some prices and I went today to pick something out. The price that the guy quoted was under my rent amount so I was hoping that I could add another room on and still keep it below what I had to spend. Well, that didn’t exactly work out. It ended up being quite a bit more than I had to spend. My mom called our boss and told him about it and he said to go ahead and do it. It ends up being almost 2 months worth of my rent, but he said it was okay.

So, sometime next week I will have new carpet in the whole front half of my house. I will feel much more comfortable having the baby crawling around on nice, new, clean carpet. Sometimes it is really nice that I’m able to rent from my boss. I get new carpet and I’m not out any money because I would have paid it in rent anyway.

I want something…

…salty and sweet, rich and gooey. I can taste it but I can’t figure out exactly what it is. I’m thinking maybe caramel swirl brownies with peanuts and ice cream on top. That might do the trick. Too bad I don’t have any here at work to satisfy my cravings.
