Walking for the Homeless

This Saturday, May 15th, I’ll be joining a team from Northland UMC to fight against homelessness in Kansas City by walking for Hillcrest Transitional Housing.  Hillcrest is an organization that provides homeless families with 90 days of transitional housing, classes in budgeting, employment, life skills & community living, and a way to bring their families back to self-sufficiency. Hillcrest gives people a fresh start when they have no where else to turn.

I’m reaching out today and asking for support from anyone who may be able to give a few dollars.  Since I’m a little late to the party, my goal is to raise $100, but I would be thrilled to exceed that goal.  Homelessness can affect anyone at any time and I feel like this is a great way to help out in my local community.

If you would like to donate, please go to to the Hillcrest Transitional Housing web site and select my name (look for Perrin) from the “Select A Participant” list at the top of the page, then click the “Sponsor Me” button and fill in the amount you would like to donate.  Every little bit helps, so even if you only have a few dollars, you will make a difference.  If you don’t feel led to donate right now, that’s ok too.  When the time is right, donate to someone in your own community and make a difference.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for donating, for reading, and for just being here.

Knitted Snug As A Bug Sleepsack

Snug As A Bug Sleeper

I’ve been holding off on this post because these two Snug As A Bug Sleepsacks were knit as a baby gift for a friend who recently had twin boys.  I’m hoping these little sleepers will help keep her boys warm during cold evenings and possibly make things just a little bit easier on her and her husband.  I can’t even imagine having twins, especially when they have two other boys under five at home as well.

When I was trying to decide what to knit up for her, I remembered seeing this pattern and went searching for it.  It was really fast to knit up and the first time I’ve ever done a 3rd needle bind off (which I loved).  I have a lot of pregnant friends right now, so I’m guessing I’ll be making a lot more of these!

**Evie wasn’t very happy when I borrowed her doll to snap these pics! She kept running around saying “Where baby?”

Faith In Action Weekend

IMG_0691

I’ve been meaning to write about the experience we had last weekend, but with the crazy busy week we had I never really got a chance to. So, here it is…a week later.

Instead of heading to church for our normal services last Sunday, we headed out to put our “Faith In Action” along with nearly 70 other members of our new church. We met up at Platte Woods church, where they already had many people working hard to pack meal packets that would be shipped to Haiti to help those who are in dire need of a healthy meal.

Not only did the adults get in on the action, but we had kids as young as two years old by our sides as we worked. (Evie did go to child care, but Zach helped out as long as I could hold his interest). We scooped rice, beans, and protein powder into plastic bags, weighed, and sealed the packs. Then they were packed into boxes and prepared for shipment.

Our combined efforts packed 300,000 meal packets, containing six servings each for the people of Haiti. In the process, my son got to learn a nice lesson about the world and what it feels like to help people who may be a little less fortunate than ourselves.

After we were finished, we took the kids to the park for doing such a great job. I was so proud of them for helping and being a part of this great experience.

We All Think She's Pretty Special

Sunday morning Evie woke up with a stuffy head and a runny nose. I didn’t think much of it at the time because I didn’t give her the usual dose of Zyrtec before bed time due to the recent recall. She was a little extra clingy, but we were in a new place for church that morning. By the time we got home (after exposing her to probably 20 other kids) I realized she had a fever and she was saying her ear hurt.

I made all the appropriate phone calls and decided I needed to stay home with her on Monday and get her to the doctor. Fortunately, she woke up with no fever and everything checked out fine at the Dr.’s office. I shelled out $30 to find out that she was just fine and maybe has a bit of a cold.

After the doctor, we stopped at my office for a few minutes, made a quick stop at Target (where I got suckered into buying her a Backyardigans dvd because she was asking for “back-agains” all morning), then headed home.

For some reason she wanted to eat her lunch in the living room. This is not something we do, well at least not since having kids, so I thought her request was funny but decided to go with it. We had a great conversation while we were eating and then I attempted to put her down for a nap, which she was having none of. I tried settling her down with her new Backyardigans video and dvd player, but that didn’t work. She wanted to watch Elmo in my bed (the only way I’ve been able to get her to nap lately). That didn’t work either. She wanted to sit in “mommy’s chair” so I let her. She was having fun manipulating me and it really was getting too late for a nap anyway so I let her enjoy it.

Shortly after that, she climbed up in the chair beside me at the kitchen table where I was attempting to work. I was listening to Pearl Jam in preparation for the show that night. She came up and started banging her head to “Save You” and said, “Mommy, my like this song!” with a huge smile on her face. She’s really been discovering music lately and I’m loving it. We had an impromptu dance party right there in the kitchen, followed by some giggles and hugs. It was one of those perfectly simple moments that fills my heart with so much joy.

Soon it was time to go pick Zach up from school. Normally I pick Zach up first so Evie rarely gets to go in with me to pick him up. The kids were out on the playground when we got there and when Zach saw us walking up he lit up. He screamed out, “Sissy!” and ran up to give her a hug and a kiss. Soon he was rounding up all of his friends because he wanted to make sure they all got to see his baby sister. He wouldn’t let us leave until everyone had seen her and kept saying, “Isn’t she cute? She’s my baby sister.” My heart was melting.

****
Fast forward several hours and Hubby and I were sitting at the Pearl Jam concert (which is a topic for a whole other post). We were chatting with the people next to us who also have two kids when Hubby asks to see a picture of Evie on my phone. I pulled up the picture I had taken that morning (above) for him and he took it to show the couple next to us. I don’t remember exactly what he said, but just like Zachary was earlier that day, he was very proud to show her off.

****
I love how we all appreciate her in different ways. I see so much of myself in my daughter, but I also see her father, and little bits and pieces of her brother. She’s a little bit of all of us, all wrapped up in one tiny little package.

Hard To Imagine

I first heard this song played live in 1998 in Knoxville, TN.  We road tripped from Maryville to Knoxville – my ex-husband, his best friend, my best friend, and myself.  To this day, that trip, and especially the night of the concert, remains one of the best memories I have during that time in my life.  Everything about it was just perfect.

There are two 8×10 framed photos that hang over my guitars, snapshots of Pearl Jam on stage.  They were taken by my friend, who was lucky enough to snag one 3rd row seat for the show.  They aren’t the best shots in the world, but they are reminders of a happy time.

My friend and I got out the scissors and glue and made a sign for the friend sitting in the 3rd row to hold up that simply said “Patriot” in hopes that we could get the band to play it.  When Eddie acknowledged our sign during the show (though they didn’t play our song), it was an incredible feeling.

A lot of people don’t get my connection to Pearl Jam, but my love for them has remained strong over the years.  In a way, they have provided the soundtrack to my life, well at least since the teen years.  Each song connects me to a memory, a piece of my life, moments of joy and heartbreak.

Hard To Imagine has kind of become my song over the years.  It can mean different things to me at different times in my life.  I’ve put meaning into this song that I doubt anyone else would ever understand.  When I listen to it, I feel every note, almost as if it is a part of me.  It would totally rock my socks if they played it Monday night, when I’ll be standing before them once again listening to pieces of my life float by.

iheartfaces – Smiles

This week’s iheartfaces photo challenge theme is “Smiles.”  One of my favorite things about photography is being able to capture a genuine smile.  I get lots of forced cheesy looking grins from my kids, but when I capture a true smile born from happiness the photo usually becomes a favorite.  There’s just something so energizing when you can see the joy pouring out of a photo.

This last weekend we celebrated my nephew Brayden’s 3rd birthday.  His parents scored a great deal on this Power Wheels motorcycle and boy was he excited to receive it!  I have a feeling he’ll be spending a lot of time outside this summer!
