I ♥ Faces – Week 27 – Sports and Pets

I haven’t participated in an I ♥ Faces weekly challenge for a while so I’m jumping back in and hoping I can keep up with it a little better.  This weeks themes are “Sports in Action” and “Pets”.  For my sports photo I pulled up an old one of Zach and his Daddy playing football.  Even though it’s a little out of focus, I think the best part of this photo is the look on Daddy’s face as Zach tries to throw the ball.

For the Pets category, here’s a cute photo of my Chihuahua/Mini Fox Terrier mix. She keeps things lively around here!

As If Disney Wasn't Getting Enough of My Money Already

Yesterday afternoon I realized we were short on diapers, plus Evie was running a fever and had just taken the last dose of Motrin so I decided we needed to make a quick trip to the store.  Since it was near lunch time, I decided we might as well all go grab some lunch and then stop at Target on the way home (yeah, I took my sick baby out to eat and to Target).  It really all started out quite innocently.

So while we’re roaming the aisles of Target to get the essentials that we need, we happened across some kid-sized fleece blankets that were on clearance.  I’ve been meaning to get Evie a new blanket because her only larger sized blanket is a double thickness fleece blanket and it is really a bit too warm for summer.  I couldn’t find any prices marked on the clearanced blankets, so I decided to look down the next aisle to see if there were any others marked down.  I spotted a couple that I liked – a generic flowery one and a cute pink and brown Hello Kitty blanket.  I held them up for Evie to pick the one she liked and she swatted them away with her hand.  She then proceeded to point at the Disney Princesses blanket on the shelf and make her sounds that say “I want that one!”  At least it was blue instead of pink.

    Score: Mommy-0, Disney-1

So we travel on down the aisle and end up near the toys where Daddy and Zach get very distracted with some Transformers.  Evie and I keep walking until we reach the shoe section.  Her last round of shoes are all starting to get a bit tight, so I thought I would see if I could find a cheap pair or two and start moving her to the next size up.  As I searched for a good bargain, Evie was busy picking out her own pair of shoes.  The first pair she pointed and grunted at were cute, but too small for her.  We kept searching.  I found a cute, sensible pair of tennis shoes that would work, but she would have nothing to do with them…because she discovered the Disney Princess tennis shoes next to them.  She started screaming for the Princess shoes.  They weren’t so bad and they were tennis shoes so I gave in.

    Score: Mommy-0, Disney-2

While she hugged her Princess tennis shoes I continued to dig through the racks searching for some cheap sandals.  That’s when she spotted these:

    princessshoes
The look of sheer joy on that girl’s face was indescribable.  The look disappeared real quick and turned into a murderous scream when I tried them on her and then attempted to take them back off.  I tried to convince her that hte silver Circo brand ones (that were exactly the same other than the color) were better but she wasn’t having it.  She insisted on the pink ones.  She wore them all the way through the store, allowing me to take them off only long enough for the guy at the check-out counter to scan the tag.  Oh, and guess what they have inside the shoe???  Disney Princesses.  They have barely left her feet since we bought them, even though the straps are starting to rub blisters on the top of her feet.

    Score: Mommy-0, Disney-3

Apparently I’m just not going to win at this game.  Up until yesterday, there were no princesses in my house, unless you count Tinkerbell, but technically she’s a fairy.  She really hasn’t been exposed to princesses at all, yet she suddenly loves them.  I have no idea how my daughter turned out to be such a girly girl.  I guess she’ll just have to play in the mud in her sparkly princess shoes.

Yes, I’m a bit of a sucker, but if her brother is going to be dressed head to toe in Lightning McQueen I guess I better just get used to princesses too.  What can I say?  I like seeing my kids happy.

My Secret Circle – Review and Giveaway

secret_circleMy Secret Circle, a new social networking world for girls, was created with internet safety in mind. The only way to access this secret world is with a USB access key.  Once you have the access key, you can set up your profile and initiate a unique charm code to print out exchange with your friends.  With the charm code you give them and an access key of their own, your friends can communicate with you in your very own secret online world.

My Secret Circle is targeted to girls ages 8-12 who want to communicate with their real friends online but who may not have the judgement to stay away from many online dangers.  The access key contains an embedded code that brings up the private My Secret Circle browser without the need for credit cards, logins, or personal information.

Senario sent me a BFF pack of My Secret Circle, which includes two online access keys, to review.  After reading about this product I was really excited to try it out.  I wish I had an 8-year-old girl around to help me test it, but instead I just had to pretend (which really wasn’t so hard because I watch a LOT of Hannah Montana).

With all of my excitement to get started, I went to tear into the package – which of course was plastic and rather difficult to get into.  Once I cut through the first layer of plastic, there was another layer to cut through before I could get to my access key.  I finally got my access key out and plugged it into my USB port on my computer.  It started loading up right away, but then told me I needed to restart my computer and update my Flash player.  Once all of that was done, My Secret Circle was up and running.  I would definitely recommend parental supervision to get going the first time, but after that it was a snap.

When My Secret Circle starts up, it asks you to create a password and then prompts you to write it down on your instruction manual so you don’t lose it.  Then it takes you to the Options page where you can use the Diva Designer to create your avatar using different hair styles, props, clothing, etc.  You can also fill in your name and other information such as your favorite TV show, movie, and such.

From there, you can click to go to your journal, im, photos, games, or chat.  You can also go to your “All About Me” page by clicking in the upper left-hand corner to see your recent activity and your friends’ activity.  The chat section requires the use of the My Secret Circle voice-chat headset, but all of the other options were available.

One of the features I really liked was that when you save a journal entry it asks you if you would like that entry to be public or private.  I thought this was great because every tween girl has a few secrets she doesn’t want to share with even her closest friends.  The private feature allows them to have a place ot write down their secrets without anyone else having access to it.

My biggest disapointment was that I couldn’t get any photos to upload.  I tried several different photos, including different sizes, and could not get any of them to work.  Once photos are uploaded, you are supposed to be able to create albums and slideshows, add text and graphics, use them in your journal entries, and use them for some of the games.  I really hope that this was just a fluke because I think the photo features would make the whole thing a lot more fun.

Overall, I think this is a great product.  I think the BFF pack would be a perfect birthday present for a tween girl.  Aside from the problem with uploading photos, this seems like a really fun place for girls to hang out with their friends.  I like that it is a one-time purchase with no online subscription fees.  I think it a great way for kids to share photos and other information securely without the wrong person intercepting it.  I would feel very safe letting my kids communicate with their friends on My Secret Circle (when they’re a little bit older anyway).

Do you know any tween girls that would love to get online and hang out with their friends?  I hope so because the lovely people at Scenario are letting me give one My Secret Circle online access key (a $19.99 value) out to one of my lucky readers!  Enter to win by completing one or all of the steps below:

    1. Leave a comment on this post telling me who you would give the My Secret Circle access key to if you win.

    Brain Dump

It would be in your best interest to ignore this post.  Seriously.

I think the worst part about blogging is that when I go for more than a week or so without really writing my mind gets all backed up.  I have so many different things to write about that my mind can’t seem to focus on any of them.  Then I start feeling guilty because I haven’t updated at all and even more guilty because I can’t seem to force myself to write my kids’ mushy birthday letters that I hope they will read someday.  Then I just sit down and start rambling because I just want to get something new on the page – like right NOW.

So, the whole month of June has been absolutely crazy.  First was our anniversary, then the trip to Texas, then a quick trip to Maryville for another wedding and racing back for Zach’s birthday party the next day.  Not to mention that things at work have been all crazy too.  It has all been such a rush, leaving very little time to sit down and focus on anything.  I’ve barely kept up with posting pictures, much less any actual content here.  It’s rather hard to post when you can barely even breathe.  This week has been a little better, but I’m so tired that every time I sit down I fall asleep.

Then I realized this morning that it is JULY already and I have the next 3 weekends booked.  Looks like it’s not going to slow down anytime soon.  Wow.  Can someone please send me a time machine?  Or just make it all stop until I can catch up?
